They are members of the same security force at the base and are friends long before Shenin finds out that Tyler is gay. The story takes place in a time when Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) was still firmly in place, and because of that gays in the military have to be very careful. Tyler is hyper-aware of any impropriety that could cause her to lose her hard won military career; she also finds that it becomes more important to her to protect Shenin from not only getting into trouble with the military, but from traveling a path that could lead to disaster for them both.
